Are You Better Off?

Dear Madame L,

I know the big question that Obama and his supporters must answer during this election is: Are we better off than we were four years ago?

Actually, they need to get other people to answer the question. So I'm asking you, Madame L: Are YOU better off than you were four years ago?

Sincerely,

Skeptical

P.S. Are you going to cover the Democratic convention like you did the Republican one?

Dear Skeptical,

Madame L agrees wholeheartedly with Sen. Tom Carper's (D-Del.) answer to the question: "We sure as heck are! Four years ago we lost 2.5 million jobs in the last two quarters. We've created more than 4 million jobs in the last 29 months."

Madame L herself is better off than she was four years ago. She knows people who have lost their jobs and can't find new ones, people who have lost their homes, and so on; but she is aware that those losses, those lost jobs and those lost homes, are the result of former Pres. Bush's failed policies and the continuing recalcitrance of Republican congressional leaders, who continue to block every effort made by the Obama administration to implement policies that will return us to our former state....

And yet, as Sen. Carper pointed out, in spite of that Republican obstinacy, more than 4 million jobs have been created in just over two years.

Sincerely,

Madame L

P.S. Madame L will be devoting some time to the Democratic National Convention, but she doubts that she'll cover it the same way she did the Republican National Convention. For one thing, Madame L expects there to be fewer lies told in Charlotte (cf Ryan speech, Romney speech, etc.). For another, Madame L is getting so tired of politics and politicians that she doesn' know how much more she can stand of the particularly ridiculous spectacle of yet another convention.
